Sac Self-Help Housing presents 16th Annual “Let Them Eat Cake”

Sacramento Self-Help Housing, a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness in our region, is proud to announce the 16th Annual “Let Them Eat Cake” event in celebration of Bastille Day at Beatnik Studios (723 S Street in Sacramento) on Thursday evening, July 12, 2018, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Presented by Sutter Health, U.S. Bank and Winn Foundation along with Patrick Kennedy, Supervisor, District 2, and Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer, District 5, guests will indulge in a fun Bastille Day celebration showcasing outstanding local cuisine, wines, brews and beverages, cake tasting, upbeat music and more. Guests will also be treated to the sounds of the multi-talented musician Gabe Dixon along with bidding on artwork created by some of the region’s most talented artists and wines from leading local wineries.

“Let Them Eat Cake” guests will enjoy bountiful appetizers along with beverage tastings by outstanding wineries and breweries such as M2 Winery, Perry Creek Winery, Sactown Union Brewery and Van der Vijver Estate Winery. Of course, cake viewing, judging, and sampling is central to this festive event. Interested guests are invited to submit their own home-made (or store-bought) creations in a spirited and fun cake contest for a chance to win great prizes. Advance entry information is suggested but not required to participate and guests can show up to the event with a cake to be added to the fun competition (note admission cost is waived for those who enter a cake in the competition). Cakes will be judged by local celebrities including ABC10’s Emmy-Award-Winning Entertainment Reporter and event emcee Mark S. Allen in at least three categories: Best Tasting, Most Creative, and Most Beautiful.

Each year, the “Let Them Eat Cake” fundraising event is scheduled on or near Bastille Day (note that Marie Antoinette is credited with coining the memorable “Let them eat cake” phrase shortly before the French Revolution). The fundraising event supports Sacramento Self-Help Housing and their efforts to identify positive solutions and workable alternatives for local community members dealing with homelessness or trying to break free from a cycle of unstable living situations. Additionally, Sacramento Self-Help Housing is partnering with the Department of Human Assistance and the County of Sacramento to relocate homeless encampments off the river, by placing them in housing, together, in our scattered-site emergency shelter program.

In addition to Sutter Health, U.S. Bank and Winn Foundation along with Patrick Kennedy, Supervisor, District 2, and Sacramento City Councilmember Jay Schenirer, District 5, the 2018 “Let Them Eat Cake” event is also proudly sponsored by Buzz Oates, Dignity Health, IBEW, Sierra Health Foundation, Sutter Health Valley Area and a number of generous individual donors.

“Let Them Eat Cake” tickets cost $40 per person or two for $75 in advance or $50 per person at the door. Again, no ticket is required for guests who submit an entry into the spirited and fun cake contest. Now in its 16th year, the annual “Let Them Eat Cake” fundraising event benefits the Sacramento Self-Help Housing organization. that is a leader in the “housing first” model of homelessness response by providing shared housing for nearly 200 homeless people in more than 45 sites with individual bedrooms and shared common areas at affordable rents with various levels of support depending on the needs of the residents. Sacramento Self-Help Housing also provides a website listing affordable housing and a “rent helpline” which includes the region’s fair housing enforcement program to address illegal discrimination.  For tickets to the “Let Them Eat Cake” fundraising event or more information about Sacramento Self-Help Housing, please visit www.sacselfhelp.org or call 916-341-0593.
