Remember Pet Safety during the 4th of July

County Animal Shelter wants your pets to remain happy and safe in their homes

Sacramento, Calif. – The Sacramento County Animal Care Facility reminds pet owners to plan ahead for the coming 4th of July holiday and keep dogs and cats safe in their own homes.

“Our stray animal population spikes during the 4th of July period. The fireworks stands are open and people celebrate early,” said Dave Dickinson, Animal Care Director. “Dogs and cats get scared and escape. Plan in advance to keep your pets calm and safe in their homes and avoid having to make a trip to the shelter to find your pet.”

Safety Tips:

Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays. You’re asking for trouble, as most pets have a very strong fear of loud, sudden noises which are like to evoke their “flight or fight mode.” Fireworks can cause true terror in a pet.

The Sacramento Front Street Shelter sponsors many adoption events at several pet centers throughout the city.  Recently, at Pet Extreme on Sutterville Road,  Lola Montez, a 7-year-old Teacup Chihuahua, stirred up lots of attention. Lola is currently being fostered off-site, but the shelter is full of precious pooches on site as well, all in need of a loving forever home.

Blind pug robbed by diabetes struggles for surgery

Blind pug robbed by diabetes struggles for surgery

SACRAMENTO, CA -- A Sacramento pug rescue group is reaching out to animal lovers in hopes of providing a much needed surgery for one of their precious pugs.

Eight year-old Mija (Mee-ha) is a playful pug who loves to snuggle. She was rescued by PugSavers, a Northern California pug rescue group, after her owner, who loved her dearly couldn't afford special care for her diabetes. Mija's foster family has been taking great care of her until she finds her forever home, but recently her condition has worsened causing blindness in both of her eyes.

It has been recommended by a specialist that both of Mija's eyes be removed to help with her diabetes and alleviate what has now become a painful condition.

Give A Holiday Gift: Open Your Heart to a Pug

Give A Holiday Gift: Open Your Heart to a Pug

SACRAMENTO,CA--With the holidays comes an incredible need, one that is not seen by most, but when discovered hard to ignore.

Cuddly, warm- hearted, peppy Pugs of all ages are left homeless in a season when animals are not top priority.

Some are abandoned, others surrendered only to be left at a shelter or area pound where their lives are often cut short due to overcrowding.

Pug Rescue of Sacramento is a non-profit organization dedicated to making sure that doesn’t happen. PRO’s is comprised of Bay Area and Sacramento volunteers prepared to mobilize when needed, but during the winter months their numbers are few. That’s why PRO’s is asking for the community’s help to lend a hand and save a warm-hearted, loyal Pug in need of a loving home.
